SUNY News: SUNY Program Pairs Interns with County Governments

March 18, 2026

Albany, NY – Columbia-Greene Community College is highlighted in a recently announced SUNY initiative that will place students in paid internships with local governments across New York State. The program, developed in partnership with the New York State Association of Counties (NYSAC), aims to provide students with hands-on experience in public service while helping counties address workforce shortages. SUNY Chancellor John King emphasized the importance of internships in preparing students for professional environments and expanding career pathways.

Locally, Greene County officials have expressed support for the initiative, noting its potential to connect students with meaningful career opportunities while strengthening county operations. Columbia-Greene Community College is already advancing this model through existing partnerships, including placing nursing students with county EMS services to gain real-world experience. The new SUNY program builds on these efforts, creating additional pathways for students to develop skills, explore public service careers, and contribute to their communities.
