In the News: Community College Enrollment Outpaces State-Operated Schools

Jan 15, 2026

A recent Daily Gazette article highlights a resurgence in enrollment across the State University of New York system, with community colleges leading the growth statewide. Columbia-Greene Community College stands out as one of the few SUNY community colleges to experience sustained enrollment growth over the past five years, averaging a 9.4% increase.

According to Joel Phelps, Vice President of Student Success at Columbia-Greene, the College’s growth reflects intentional changes to academic programs and delivery models based on student needs. “It’s because the college changed its programs and how they are offered, based on students’ needs,” Phelps said.

The article also notes Columbia-Greene’s long-standing focus on adult learners. While the SUNY Reconnect program—which offers tuition-free education to adults in high-need fields—has not yet driven the same immediate enrollment surge at Columbia-Greene as at neighboring colleges, Phelps expressed confidence in continued growth as the program evolves. The College is also exploring ways to expand Reconnect into certificate programs in high-demand areas, including Licensed Practical Nursing.

Retention remains a key priority for Columbia-Greene, particularly as the only community college serving its counties. Phelps emphasized the importance of sustained outreach and support, describing the College’s approach as “continuous engagement” aimed at adults in the region who have little or no college experience but could benefit from accessible higher education opportunities.
