In the News: C-GCC receives state grant for environmental education

Columbia-Greene Community College (C-GCC) has been awarded $46,124 through New York State’s Hudson River Estuary Grants Program to support a new “Community Capstone Project Experience,” an initiative designed to strengthen environmental education and expand hands-on learning opportunities for students. The project will enhance training for future environmental educators at C-GCC while increasing access to Hudson River-focused field experiences for K-12 students in the region.

The grant is part of a broader $964,468 investment from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), which is funding 14 projects to improve water quality, protect drinking water, and promote environmental stewardship throughout Hudson River communities. The program prioritizes initiatives that serve communities most vulnerable to environmental challenges and climate impacts.

At C-GCC, the funding will support experiential learning opportunities that connect classroom instruction with real-world environmental issues. By engaging both college students and younger learners, the initiative underscores the College’s commitment to sustainability, workforce development, and community partnership. The project also aligns with statewide efforts to build climate resilience and foster a deeper understanding of the Hudson River Estuary and its ecosystem.
